What Should I Expect During My First Physical Therapy Appointment?

Your first session will include:

  • A comprehensive evaluation of your condition, pain levels, and movement patterns.

  • A discussion of your medical history and treatment goals.

  • Functional tests to assess strength, flexibility, balance, and range of motion.

  • A personalized treatment plan, including exercises and therapy techniques.

What should I wear to my physical therapy session?

Please wear comfortable workout clothing to allow for easy mobility or possible soft tissue work

  • For hip region,shorts are recommended

  • For shoulder/neck region, we encourage a top that exposes shoulder blade area

How Long Does Each Session Last?

Each session is approximately 60 minutes, depending on your condition and individualized treatment plan.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of visits depends on:

  • The severity of your injury or condition.

  • Your progress and response to treatment.

  • Your personal goals (returning to sports, improving mobility, pain relief, etc.).

​Your physician will adjust your plan as needed to ensure the best results.

Will Physical Therapy Be Painful?

Your first session will include:

Some discomfort is normal, especially when working through stiffness or weakness.
However, PT should not cause sharp or severe pain. Communicate with your therapist so they can adjust exercises accordingly.

How Quickly Will I See Results?

Results vary based on your condition and consistency with therapy. Some people experience improvement within a few sessions, while others with more complex injuries may take weeks or months. Commitment to home exercises can accelerate progress.

Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral for Physical Therapy?

In California, due to the Direct Access law, patients can receive physical therapy services without a doctor's referral. This law, in effect since 2014, allows up to 12 visits or 45 days of treatment, whichever comes first.

Does Insurance Cover Physical Therapy?

We exclusively accept Workers' Compensation cases and do not currently accept private health insurance. However, for those not covered by Workers' Compensation, each 1-hour session is available at a cash price of $120.

What Can I Do at Home to Support My Recovery?

Your therapist will provide a home exercise program (HEP) to reinforce what you do in sessions. Staying consistent with your exercises, maintaining proper posture, and following activity guidelines can improve your recovery.
